Dressing like a Princess…

We are so enthralled by the April 2011 nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Could it be that we secretly had a crush on the prince or is it simply that every little girl dreams of being a princess? Whatever the case, we love ALL the hype and excitement surrounding this historic wedding.

Starting tomorrow, January 25th, Reiss an English design house will have Kate’s engagement look for sale. Check out the website below. This would be a fab rehearsal dinner or get away dress for the “princess” in your life.

Mamie + James…welcome my friend!

With much pride, I would like to introduce you all to Mamie + James. A collection of hand-made garters by one of my very best and talented friends, Loren James. Loren uses “notions collected from open air markets in Paris + New York and even some from Mamie’s sewing box.”  Mamie + James start at $35-$250. Loren offers customization too!

Inspiration comes in many forms, some unexpected, and some very close to the heart. Loren found the inspiration for her line, Mamie + James, in the form of the adventurous life of her Mamie and Papa, and how their love brought them to so many places together. She grew up hearing tales of their life in Morocco, of traveling by sea with two small children, and how they would sit out a storm on top of well-worn suitcases. Endlessly inspired by Mamie’s flair for evening wear and her love for sewing, even as a young girl Loren marveled at her ability to make something incredibly stunning and feminine from very basic materials with such ease. Remembering all the beautiful and whimsical things she experienced during her childhood, Loren set off on her own adventure to write a story all her own – one that led her to travel, explore and create a very personal collection of memories, sketches, photographs and garments. Her story took her all the way from Savannah, GA to the beautiful French countryside. By combining her childhood daydreams with modern-day exploration, Loren has created her collection for Spring 2011. A collection that infuses chic, modern shapes with delicate vintage detailing – for the girl who wishes to embark on her own series of adventures.

Weddings in a Winter Wonderland Land!

I LOVE researching for wedding inspiration and with that, I LOVE winter weddings. There is something so magical about being married in the winter. Maybe it’s the sound of the fireplace crackling or the feeling of bundling up with your love bug, but whatever it is, it sure does make me happy.

an October day in New Orleans!

After a few miserable experiences at wedding dress shops in New Orleans, I was convinced I would be wearing grey sweatpants to walk down the aisle.  Thanks to Google, I found Heidi, made my appointment, and headed to my home town of Birmingham to get “the dress.”  From the moment my mom and I walked in, Heidi made us feel comfortable and welcome.  Although I did not know exactly what I wanted, Heidi truly listened to what I had to say.  My dress is a true collaboration between Heidi’s amazing talent and the vision I had in my head.  What she created was better than I ever could have imagined! Rob and I were married on a gorgeous October day in New Orleans.  Both the wedding and reception were at Latrobe’s on Royal, a beautifully historic building in the French Quarter, which had the rustic and romantic feel we were looking for.  Before the festivities began, the two of us walked to take pictures around the Quarter with our photographer.  It was so great to take some alone time together before the ceremony.  Locals and tourists alike thought we were shooting pictures for a wedding magazine, and some even started to follow us around. Everything about the day was absolutely perfect from the flowers to the music and the food.  I had an amazing time, and better yet, I got to marry by best friend.  We were so blessed to be surrounded with so much love from our family and friends, and everyone had a great time dancing and goofing off in the photo booth at the reception. I have never felt more beautiful in my entire life than I did wearing my one-of-a-kind wedding dress made by Heidi.  Being able to create my own wedding dress was such a great experience for my mom and I to share together.  Heidi is not only an amazing designer, she is an incredibly warm and caring person.  I am so grateful to have worked with her!
Love,
Amanda

Jenny Nelson and Trey Hill – February 7, 2009 Tuscaloosa, Alabama

It is such an honor to be given the responsibility of the most important garment a women will ever wear.  The gown, is such an intricate part of the wedding day. I have decided to share some of my bride’s wedding stories and the amazing gowns that go with them.

I hope you ENJOY!!!

A letter from the bride.

It was a Tuesday in June when I finally accepted the invitation of a friend to go to a “small group” for singles through our church.  Trey did not attend the group on a regular basis but had decided to stop by that night to reconnect with some friends.  I was introduced to Trey within minutes after arriving at Olexa’s.  Little did I know, accepting that invitation would change our lives forever.

A few days later, we went on our first date.  It was the perfect date-under the stars at Caldwell park, listening to the symphony play Abba music.  We had an instant connection that we couldn’t deny.  And, on the three-month anniversary of that date, next to where he had written our names in the sand, Trey proposed.  It was surreal, after so many years of looking, wishing and praying for the “right one”, at ages 36 and 37, we had found each other.

Now, to plan the perfect wedding…

First on my list was to find the perfect dress!  It was an overwhelming task.  I started my search in Birmingham.  Then a trip to Atlanta and Dallas to try on hundreds of wedding dresses at the top bridal boutiques.  Although I found many beautiful gowns, none seemed to have all of the elements I was searching for.  My quest ended with my first meeting with Heidi Elnora.  Just like I knew Trey was “the one”, I knew this was the answer to my dress dilemma.  What could be more perfect than having my dream gown designed and created by a couture designer?  My experience working with Heidi was amazing from start to finish.  And, in the end, I had a gown more beautiful than I could have ever imagined!  It was the perfect dress!

Thanks Heidi for making me beautiful on my wedding day!

Love you lots!

So much to do….

Now that I have  heidi elnora – Atlanta up and running, it is time to re-focus and put some much needed attention on  October 17Th…THE BIG DAY!  My brides have been so sweet to continuously check in on me and on my progress. They  all ask “How are your plans coming?” I fell so bad to never have any updates. So to all of you that have been asking and worrying about me, I am OFFICIALLY planning and here are the latest updates.

*I have finally approved the save the dates. Poor Heather at SWOOZIES. As you all know, I am very detail oriented and I just couldn’t decide on the right pantone color for the wording. I think I have made a final decision but I might still have time to change it. Just in case.

*Yesterday, I booked the flight for Mom and I to got to NY to pick out all of the fabulous fabrics for my gown(s). We are so excited about the trip. It’s time to get inspired!!!!

*My photographer and dear friend Angela Karen sent me a few pictures from our engagement party at our family farm.  She does such good work. I am thinking about just using one of these for  our engagement announcement. Any thoughts as to which one?

Molly McNutt and Clay Morrison – May 30,2009

MollyHouse

Dearest Heidi,

When I went to the Portico Bridal Show over a year ago and  I saw your dresses and then I saw you, it was so incredibly obvious that your dresses topped all the others. I told my Mom I didn’t want to look anywhere else, I just wanted to set up an appointment with you. But she still made me look at all the places around Birmingham, and I’m so glad she did because it made coming to your shop seem all the more special. The dress you designed for me is the prettiest piece of clothing I’ve ever seen. I mean it. You designed a dress that was 100 times prettier than what I had imagined. Every time I came to your shop it was so much fun. You really made the whole process so special for me and all the women in my family. It’s rare for someone so artistically talented as yourself to be as easy to talk to and so pretty too. You got it all, and I know your personality and talent will take you a long way in life. I can’t wait to walk down the isle in my dress. If anyone spills anything on it, they are going down. :)

Love ya,

Molly McNutt

From Alabama to Iowa…Michelle Danielle McDonald September 19, 2009

I arrived at my apartment just before 3:00am, following a trip to Miami with my brother, a delayed flight, and a tiring two hour drive home. My grumpiness had the best of me as I stumbled upstairs to my apartment. When I opened the door, I felt I might be hallucinating. There were candles lit everywhere and vases and vases of orchids and calla lilies all over my small apartment. Tea lights lined the floor, creating a trail. I knew I was supposed to follow them, but I couldn’t move. Sam peeked his head out from around the corner and mentioned that I was very late (not an unusual occurrence for me). After asking me several times to come to him, I was finally able to move and set all of my bags down with Sam’s help. I tried not to get too excited just in case he was simply (very elaborately) welcoming me home. He got down on one knee and told me he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me. I said “yes!”, sat on his knee, and began crying immediately. After a minute or two, he asked if I wanted to see the ring. I responded “oh yes, I guess I do!”

I had an idea in mind for a gown, but had never seen it…anywhere. While looking through a bridal magazine in Target I spotted a dress that just enveloped everything I had pictured in my mind. I sat on the floor (right there in the aisle) and admired it, until my fiancé came. I showed him quickly, without saying a word…and he said, “You better write down the name Heidi Elnora.” I didn’t have to write it down. I think it was permanently branded into my brain. I rushed home to look up the website on the internet and saw several gowns that were more beautiful than any others I’d ever seen….only to find that Heidi’s shop was in Birmingham, Alabama. I live in Des Moines, Iowa…so I counted the option out.

I started the process of gown shopping with my mother and aunt/godmother. I felt their opinions were the most important and wanted to keep the experience, for the most part, between the three of us. After each scheduled appointment, I felt more and more discouraged. Not only because the gowns I found were not “me”, but the women in the bridal shops were not listening. They were trying to make the gowns they had “work” for me. I explained that I did not want a strapless dress, and was even laughed at because of this request in one bridal shop. After months of searching, my mother encouraged me to contact Heidi Elnora to see if it might be an option. Pessimism at it’s peak, I reluctantly emailed Heidi and gave her the news that I live in the Midwest and was not going to be able to travel to Birmingham. Heidi, of course, made it work and from day one treated me like I was the only bride she was working with…though I knew there were many many more. Due to the distance, a custom gown was not an option for me…but when Reanna Alice arrived in the mail, I knew she was the one. It was the first time I had actually been excited about my wedding gown, since prior to that the whole experience had been quite a disappointment. Heidi made the rest of the process so simple, and made alterations to Reanna through emails, photos, and phone calls. It was all I could do to not book a quick flight just to give Heidi a big hug!

The gown was a surprise for my fiancé Sam, and it was very difficult to keep it a secret from him…given I was so ecstatic about it. The look on his face (and the tears) when he saw me for the first time made the wait completely worth it. We were married on a beautiful nearly-autumn day at the Basilica of Saint John in Des Moines, IA, for a very traditional Roman Catholic celebration with a choir singing in Latin and an organ and strings to accompany. The gown and chapel-length mantilla veil that Heidi created fit the ambiance of the Basilica perfectly. The wedding day was extraordinarily captured through the lenses of Gehman Photography of Kalona, IA. The guest list included our closest friends and family, including the bride’s 62 aunts and uncles, their children and grandchildren and those who were looking down from heaven, especially my father. Each of the six bridesmaids wore a navy J.Crew dress of their choice and carried a unique bouquet of white blooms. The groom wore a three-piece navy pinstripe suit also from J.Crew.

The reception following was at Sticks, an award winning design studio nestled in a scenic wooded lot, where floor to ceiling windows provide an unrestricted view of the natural surroundings. Just after the sun set, the couple fox-trotted their way through their first dance “More” by Bobby Darin, performed by the live band The R Factor of Minneapolis, MN. The guests danced the night away to the best wedding entertainment Des Moines, IA had ever experienced!

Our deepest gratitude to Heidi Elnora for her kindness and talent in creating a dress and veil that truly reflected our love and faith in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. You are a dream.

We got a COVER!!!!

For the first time in history, a heidi elnora gown will grace the cover of the Alabama Weddings magazine, 2010 edition. What a great day, what a special Christmas gift! Thank you so much AW.

As for the model, she’s not too bad herself. My sweet bride and friend, Haleigh Stidham Blackwell will launch this year’s magazine. Haleigh’s fit-to-flare gown shows off the fabulous figure of this once Miss Alabama. This gown is made of a nude satin base with an ivory, Italian alencon lace overlay. It  has a sweetheart neckline with a low “v” back. Haleigh wore a second party gown for her reception. To see more of Haleigh, her 2nd look, or over 25 pages of heidi elnora’s gowns, pick up an Alabama Weddings magazine today. You never know, you could be next!

Callie came to me a few months ago and wanted to wear her Mom’s gown. With some major changes and a few alterations, we transformed Callie’s Mom’s gown to a new and improved version. This is another great way to be green in more ways than one!

The birds are back in town!

Lately, I have noticed that a lot of brides are changing their hair or at least hair piece for their reception. For the past year or so, it seems that everyone is placing a flower in their hair. The new trend, which will probably take a minute to go into full effect, is the birdcage veil. Feel free to get inspired!

An “ah” moment

As an artist, you must constantly search for inspiration. Sometimes it reveals itself to you while other times you must search for it, all the while waiting for that “Ah” moment. I was watching tv last night while playing on my MAC and came upon a few “Ah’s.”

I couldn’t agree more!

You may know her from “The City” or from her reality show “Kell on Earth” on Bravo. Yesterday at the SCAD Style Gala, I had the opportunity to listen to Kelly Cutrone’s lecture. My favorite part of the entire thing was at the end when she spoke about “being made in the USA, and the importance of bringing jobs back to our country.” I couldn’t agree more!

Check out her new book!

Wedding day do’s…

If you have started your bridal binder or if you haven’t, it is a good idea to create a section for your wedding day hair and make up. This will save you a lot of time and stress by having a game plan. Start pulling swipes of what you like. This will help you to show your hair stylist and make-up artist the exact look you are going for.

The Blushing Bride

Every bridal magazine you see and every blog you read advice you to start your wedding day beauty regiment at least 4 months before your big day. As a recent bride, I 100% agree.

For starters…

1. Start drinking water. Lots and lots of water.

2. Schedule a consultation with your esthetician to discuss your plan of action.

3. Avoid too much stress. Yoga, pilates, and naps all worked for me.

It’s all in the details-FLOWERS!

All most every bride uses flowers in some capacity for their wedding. From whimsical to traditional the type of flower you choose and how they are arranged make a huge statement about your wedding. Certain flowers such as a calla lily is great for a more traditional wedding, where a peony is great for a softer, more whimsical wedding. We went for the whimsical feel this time around!

It’s all about the bling…Oh, I mean RING!

For the past few weeks I have been helping one of my girlfriends search for the “perfect” ring. We all know the  4 “C’s”. Yet, when it is all said and done, none of that really matters. It’s truly all about you and your buddy but it sure is fun to play “pretend.”

DYI…ring bearer pillows!

Ring bearer pillows are super easy and fun to make. You can make them out of almost anything. If you can, use  left over fabric from your wedding gown or bridesmaid dresses. If you have a special handkerchief that you want to incorporate in your big day, sew it on as an applique. The possibilities are endless.

Milk and Mint Julep’s

A big wedding day trend is having your own signature drink. For our wedding we had a his and her food station with his and her signature drinks. My husband’s family once  owned a dairy before it was sold to Barber’s. In honor of his family and Jeff’s favorite snack we had milk with donuts.

As a true “Southern” girl we had mint julep’s with cornbread, pork chops, and “country caviar.” Our guest had so much fun enjoying the delicious bites from Kathy G. while learning a little bit more about their bride and groom.

Giving him the Bout!

A boutonniere may be a very small detail but it is a detail none the less. If your groom hasn’t been very involved in the wedding planning, this may give him a great way to participate. It might be easiest to give him a few ideas that are already “approved” and let him choose the one he likes the best.

One of my favorites!

Over the past 8 years, I have had thousands of photo shoots. Photographers will take hundreds and hundreds of images to come up with that one shot. All it takes is one shot to portray what an artist is trying to say. The below image was shot by my photographer friend, Jason Wallis. The model, was my very first heidi elnora bride, Stephanie Bensko. To this day this is one of my most favorite images of all time. It takes my breath away!

Tying the Knot!

What exactly does tying the knot mean? We have all said it at least once. The dictionary explains it as “To become husband and wife in legal ceremony.” While the urban dictionary explains it as “Tying the knot of the ropes in the marriage bed.” However, you want to take it is up to you.

See how these brides “tied the knot!”

Stick it to me…

A great way to “jazz” up a traditional wedding shoe is to add a little sparkle and a little personalization, through the use of stickers. Sticky back rhinestone and pre-fabricated rhinestone appliques are easy to find and easy to attach. Share them with your bridesmaids or just use them for yourself. No matter what, just have fun with it!

Marilyn Monroe in 2010!

I am so excited to share with you a few  images from one of my May weddings. When I first met Jennifer Hendricks, she was “over” the search for the perfect gown. After chatting for about an hour and a half, I sketched out this gown for her. Jennifer’s theme was old Hollywood. I think these images will show how we captured Jennifer as a 2010 version of Marilyn Monroe!

Recipes…

For those of you who truly know me know, that I am not much of a chef. I can make a mean panini, pretty good spaghetti, and cereal. Other than that, it’s all up to Jeff. When we were engaged I received a hand full of recipe books. Those help a lot but my favorite recipes are those given by the chefs themselves, my Mom, Stepmom, Mother-in-law, and especially my Aunt Susie. For some reason, when a recipe is on a fun note card, it makes it that much more appetizing!

Backyard Barbeque!

If you are having an outdoor or summer wedding, a great way to save cost on your reception food is having a backyard barbeque. It’s fun, easy, and will save you a dollar or two!

Yield: 24 Servings
Cost per Serving: $0.78

Ingredients

  • 4  slices bacon
  • 1  onion, finely chopped
  • 2  garlic cloves, minced
  • 3  pounds  lean ground beef
  • 2  tablespoons  Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper
  • 24  small dinner rolls

Preparation

In a skillet, cook bacon until crisp. Remove bacon and drain on paper towels. Discard all but 2 Tbsp. bacon fat. Cook onion in bacon fat until translucent, about 3 minutes, then add garlic and cook 30 seconds longer. Remove mixture from pan and let cool. Crumble bacon when cool enough to handle.

In a large bowl combine beef, bacon, onion mixture, Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper, and mix well. Form into 24 small patties and chill.

Preheat grill to medium; oil when hot. Cook burgers for about 7 minutes for medium rare, turning once halfway through. Serve burgers on rolls.

One of my favorites!

Ann Yates Wyatt was one of my June brides. Ann Yates wore one of my most favorite gowns that I have ever designed. I hope you love her gown as much as we did.

Also, Ann Yates, thank you for this sweet email. It means so much to me!

“PS- I forgot to tell you you the most important part! Everybody was so in love with my dress! I mean even men made comments about how cool and different it was. My florist has been tweeting about it and updating her facebook status about and she of course mentioned it was custom made by Heidi Elnora! She is pretty funny. She was so excited when I told her you made my dress. She is quite the fan! Anyway, I think the photographer really had fun with it and it was so fun to wear! I didn’t want to take it off after the reception. I kept it on for a good hour after Jon and I got back to our room!” – Ann Yates Wyatt

The kindest compliment!

Heidi,

I know I told you all this when I saw you after my wedding but I really wanted to let you know again how thankful I am of you. I never could have achieved such a magical day if it hadn’t been for your love, support, guidance and of course AMAZING dress! I still look back at that day and besides marrying Jason the thing that sticks out the most is how beautiful I felt in my dress. As you remember when we first meet so very long ago I had a hard time trying to determine what dress was going to hold up to my dreams and visions and also everyone elses expectations. Being in the fashion business and loving it as much as I do, everyone knew that my dress would be far from ordinary and it would be a true work of art…And that is exactly what you accomplished! All the hours you spent with me reassuring me or trying every twist and tuck and pleat that I thought would work on the dress came together to make the most amazing dress I had ever seen.  And imagine I lucky I felt to be the one to get to wear it!
I have NEVER in my life had so many people compliment me on something as they did with that dress. I had everyone stop and want a picture not of me, but of your dress! From random people on the beach, at the condo, and even the cooks at the reception everyone came out to look at my dress! As I said before this was more than a wedding dress, this was my dream, our vision and your work of art. It was my pleasure and honor to wear a Heidi Elnora couture gown and I just want you to know that. Thank you from the bottom of my heart (and my moms!)

Love,

Courtland Weed Tison

A Featured Bride!

Tomorrow night!

I am so excited to attend one of my new friends/bride’s wedding. It is going to be super fabulous, if I say so myself. She has not one but two heidi elnora gowns. One of which will be in the 2011 collection. Since these gowns are both true couture gowns, we have put a little over 100 hours in each. Her wedding gown will have over 80 yards of fabric. To be honest, I am a little obsessed with both.

Last night, my brides photographer Leslee Mitchell, came into town for the gown unveiling. Since the wedding isn’t until tomorrow, Leslee was kind enough to post a few image from inside my shop. I think they are wonderful. Please check out more of Leslee’s work  http://www.lesleemitchellphotography.com/

2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits, a dollar….

‎2 bits, 4 bits, 6 bits, a dollar. All for encouraging our youth, stand up and holler!!!!

In celebration of Fall and Alabama’s favorite sport, Heidi will be donating 10 cents to FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) for every new “like” she has on her heidi elnora business page. It cost $385 to send a young athlete to camp http://www.fcacamps.org/. Our goal is to send 2 athlete’s to camp. So we are looking to gain a total of 7700 new “likes” which will equal $770. So far we have 1400 likes so that is $140.00 towards sponsoring a youth. Please spread the word. It only will take you a few seconds to send this page to your friends. It doesn’t cost you anything except for your time. If everyone can get 10 friends to “like” heidi elnora we will surpass our goal, which would be FABULOUS!!!!! Thanks for spreading the word and we mean literally.

Happy Anniversary…

I can hardly believe that this Sunday will be one year since I married my sweet husband. We had such a beautiful and perfect day. All the months that I spent planning and organizing truly made our wedding day everything that I hoped it to be. Thank you to everyone, especially my parents, that helped  to make our day so sweet!

Jeff, I love you SO much. Happy Anniversary!

NYC Fashion Week…

As most of you know, Heidi gave birth to her precious baby boy Jack, 3 weeks ago. Since she is super busy being a super Mommy, she was unable to present at fashion week this past weekend. However, here are a few images of what will be in stores in January. Don’t worry, there is way more to come….

Katie Grace – basic silhouette. A silk shantung strapless ball gown with pockets.

Coco Marie – basic silhouette. A silk shantung strapless gown with sweetheart neckline, low v-back, and chapel length train.

Ashley Brooke – A one-shoulder mini with ostrich feather skirt and rhinestone belt/strap.

And the winner is….

Last night at the BAMA theater in Tuscaloosa, Alabama the 2011 Miss Alabama and Miss Alabama Teen were crowned. It was an extremely exciting night for the contestants as well as the audience.

After two long days of competition, Miss Tuscaloosa, Madeline Mitchell was crowned as Miss Alabama beating out Miss Vulcan, Rachel Jarvis, who finished first runner-up.

“It is a true honor to win this event,” Mitchell said. “I’m so excited. It was amazing. I had all my friends here supporting me. It just felt great.”

Congratulations Madeline. We are looking forward to designing you a dress and watching you compete for Miss USA in Las Vegas!!!
